What it checks
Is the port open
Four TCP connects to the port you choose. If they succeed, something is listening.
Connect time
Minimum, average and maximum, to spot a slow or unstable route.
Which address
The IP address the name resolves to, so you know which server answered.
Questions
Why TCP instead of ICMP ping?
Many firewalls drop ICMP, so a normal ping says "down" for servers that work. A TCP connect also proves the service on that port answers.
How do I check if a port is open?
Enter host:port, for example mail.example.com:25. If the connects succeed, the port is open.
Can I monitor a port all the time?
Yes. Add a TCP port monitor and we check it every minute from every location.
Check it every minute, not once
Add it as a monitor: checks every minute from several locations, alerts when it is really down, and SSL and domain expiry warnings. Free.
